Boxing Training Diet
Boxing Training Diet
Overview
To become lean and fit like a boxer, you will want to align four main nutrition principles: proper eating frequency, proper nutrient timing, proper balance of macronutrients and proper total caloric intake. This will enable you to have the necessary energy for training, and it will enhance recovery. These principles will assist you in increasing your metabolism and facilitating your body to burn fat as its primary fuel source.Eating Frequency
Eat five to eight times per day to stabilize blood sugar and keep you energy levels high all day long. This eating frequency will keep your glycogen stores (glycogen is energy for the body, formed from the ingestion of carbohydrates) loaded and reloaded. Just like a boxer, this high eating frequency will start with breakfast and will end with dinner and possibly recovery fuel prior to bed. This recovery fuel prior to bed will assist in muscle repair, powering you up for the next days workout.Free Meal Planner Hundreds of Fast & Tasty Recipes Learn w/ the Free Recipe Toolbar! TotalRecipeSearch.com
Nutrient Timing
Before your early morning workout, consume a complex carbohydrate fuel source for an even more productive training session. This will allow you to top off your glycogen stores to facilitate fat burning. During your workout, sip on a fluid replacement drink to replace calories and electrolytes to prevent muscle cramping. Following your workout, consume a recovery fuel source containing mainly carbohydrates and some protein to reload glycogen stores. This recovery fuel enables boxers to have productive training sessions day after day.Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are going to be the mainstay of your nutrition plan. Your carbohydrate intake should be 50 to 65 percent of your total daily consumed calories. Fat will burn in the presence of carbohydrates, and this high carbohydrate consumption keeps boxers extremely lean. Focus on complex carbohydrates (as opposed to simple sugars) such as whole wheat breads and pasta, brown rice, quinoa and sweet potatoes. You also want to consume fruit, which will provide great antioxidants. Antioxidants are critical to your nutrition plan, as these will combat free radicals brought about during heavy training loads.Protein and Fat
Protein will make up approximately 20 to 30 percent of your daily calories. It is the amino acids (building blocks of protein) in the protein sources that assist in muscle repair. Consume lean protein sources such as chicken, fish, beef, egg whites and protein supplements. Your third macronutrient, dietary fat, should consist of 20 to 30 percent of your daily caloric intake. Consume dietary fat from sources such as nuts, nut butters and flax.Antioxidants and Total Calories
To combat free radical damage (free radicals are formed during times of stress, training, etc.), consume antioxidants from fruits, vegetables and multivitamins. Take a multivitamin each morning and consume fruit and vegetables with four to six of your meals and snacks. Your total daily caloric intake will be based on your goals (weight loss, weight gain, etc.). If you are looking to maintain your weight, determine your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate; this is the amount of calories we burn at rest) using a body fat scale. If you have a BMR of 2,000 calories, consume 2,000 to 2,200 calories per day and add an additional 350 to 650 calories per hour of training.2-a-Day Training Day
If you choose to train two times per day like a boxer, here is an example of what your daily nutrition will look like:Consume a liquid carbohydrate pre-training supplement consisting of 60 to 70 percent carbohydrates prior to your early morning workout. During your training session, sip on one to two bottles of fluid replacement drink. Immediately following your workout, consume recovery fuel consisting of 70 to 80 percent carbohydrate.
For breakfast, consume a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter, a banana and 6 egg whites. For a mid-morning snack, eat an apple, a can of vegetable juice, almonds and a protein drink followed by a 12-inch turkey sub on whole wheat bread with vegetables and cheese for lunch.
Prior to your afternoon workout (sip on a bottle of fluid replacement drink during this workout), repeat the pre-training fuel from earlier followed by a post workout recovery supplement containing 70 to 80 percent carbohydrates. For dinner, consume a grilled chicken breast, whole wheat pasta with sauce, vegetables and a salad. To facilitate recovery and maximize your training session the next day, consume a protein drink one hour before bed.

Home Boxing Training You Can Train Anywhere!
Home Boxing Training
Intense and strenuous, boxing training is one of the most effective methods of exercise. Though many aspects of the training are best done in a boxing gym, a home gym can be effective too.
Running
- Running is the most basic form of boxing training, and it can be done without a boxing gym. The base level of leg and cardiovascular conditioning produced by running is the layer upon which all other boxing fitness is built. Punching power starts with the legs, but as a fight wears on, a boxer's legs can tire and lose strength, lessening his punching effectiveness. Extensive running can build the legs and condition them to retain strength late into fights.
Jumping Rope
- You do not need a boxing gym to train by jumping rope. To jump rope, all you need is an area with a tall ceiling or no ceiling at all. To start, focus on the simple act of jumping over the rope as it reaches the ground. As your coordination and fitness improves, you can twist the rope and alter your cadence to work on your footwork. Jumping rope helps build on the conditioning gained through running and improves footwork and agility.
Heavy Bag
- One of the most utilized pieces equipment in a boxing gym, a heavy bag could be used in a home gym as well. To mount a heavy bag, you will need an exposed ceiling beam, so it is probably best mounted in a garage. When the bag is mounted, you can practice punching combinations and work on your conditioning just as you would in a boxing gym. Punches include the jab, uppercut, cross and hook. The jab is a straight punch thrown by the fist closest to the opponent. The uppercut is a vertical punch, usually thrown at the chin from below. The hook is a horizontal punch thrown from side to side and usually aimed at the chin. The cross is a straight punch like the jab but thrown across the body. Punching combinations can be any grouping of one or more punch types thrown in quick succession.
Speed Bag
- Like the heavy bag, a speed bag is heavily utilized in boxing gyms, but they also easy to set up for home workouts. A speed bag is probably best set up in a garage, requiring only that the bag apparatus is screwed to two wall studs. The speed bag can be tricky at first, so expect to practice for weeks before you can start doing full training. To start, hit the bag. The bag will hit the back of the apparatus and spring forward. When it swings forward and hits the front of the apparatus, strike the bag again. Continue this motion, alternating punching hands. When you have the rhythm down, start building up arm strength and hand speed by performing timed sessions mixed with other training.
Shadow Boxing
- A staple of the boxing gym, shadowboxing can be done anywhere a mirror is available. Shadowboxing is basically standing alone in front of a mirror, mixing footwork and punching combinations. Take the punching combinations you have learned on the heavy bag and practice them while bouncing around and pretending to dodge punches from an opponent. Using a mirror allows you to self-analyze your own form.
Sparring
- Sparring is the most effective method of boxing training but also the most difficult to incorporate in a home gym setting. Sparring is exhibition boxing, with the goal of practicing skills and developing fitness without determining a winner. A good choice would be to set up an area outside where you can spar on the grass or a mat. Because sparring can be so physical, and there is a danger of being knocked down or out, be very careful of the surface upon which you spar, as you could end up falling and hitting your head on it.

UFC 128 Predictions & UFC 128 ODDS Can You Pick Better?
MMA Picks: UFC 128 Main Card Preview and Predictions |
The UFC returns to Newark, New Jersey with a highly-anticipated title bout between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and the young upstart Jon “Bones” Jones. The card has a local flavor with New Jersey natives Dan and Jim Miller in key middleweight and lightweight bouts. The event also features long-time favorites Urijah Faber and Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic taking on young competitors hungry to put their name into title contention with a victory over a legend.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the bouts with some fearless predictions as to who will emerge victorious.
MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)
LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BOUT:
•Champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (19-4) vs. Jon “Bones” Jones (12-1): This fight has had the MMA world buzzing since it was announced that Jones would be stepping in for his teammate Rashad Evans to challenge Rua for the light-heavyweight strap. Jones comes in off a dominant submission victory over top contender Ryan Bader just six weeks ago at UFC 126. Rua has been out of action since last May with yet another knee injury. In that May bout, Shogun dismantled the previously unbeaten Lyoto Machida to win the UFC Light-Heavyweight title.
This one has fireworks written all over it as both men bring dynamic yet devastating styles to the cage. Rua has been smashing through opponents since his days in Japan with the Pride Fighting Championships while Jones burst on the scene with his unorthodox and lethal striking attack. There are several factors that I see as keys in this fight. First, is Shogun’s knee 100% or will we see a repeat of his dismal performance against Forrest Griffin. Second, will the fact that Jones comes in late and is favored over the champion provide incredible motivation for an already dangerous fighter in Rua. And third, is it too soon for Jones to be coming back after such an emotional victory against Bader to challenge for the title. My answers to those questions are all yeses, I believe Shogun is 100% and highly motivated by the fact that Jones is favored and I believe that the turnaround will be too quick for Jones for such big fights. The other factor is that Jones has never been attacked the way Rua will come at him and granted no one can simulate Bones either, Shogun has been in with many of the best in the world. It will be Shogun’s attack and the questions about whether Jones has the chin to withstand Rua that will ultimately lead to an explosive fight with Shogun retaining his title via third round TKO. Jones will have his day as champion, just not Saturday night.
Rua over Jones by TKO in round three to retain his UFC light-heavyweight title.
•Urijah “California Kid” Faber (24-4) vs. Eddie Wineland (18-6-1): The co-main event marks the long awaited UFC debut of Urijah Faber, the long-time face of the WEC. Faber has recently dropped down to bantamweight and is looking to make another title run after disposing of Takeya Mizugaki in November. Wineland is the former WEC Bantamweight champion but has been flying under the radar lately. Wineland is a gritty fighter willing to mix it up with anyone and has good power with either hand.
Don’t sleep on Wineland in this one. If you can get long odds on Eddie in this one throw a few dollars down as a value bet as Wineland has the grit and punching power to give Faber fits. Those fits will come early and once the California Kid weathers the early storm he will use his incredible pace and cardio to wear down Wineland. By round three it should be all Faber and the Team Alpha Male leader will put an exhausted Wineland to sleep with a rear naked choke in a very good fight.
Faber over Wineland by rear naked choke submission in round three.
•Jim Miller (19-2) vs. Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2): The second of the Miller boys takes center stage in this bout against former WEC standout Kamal Shalorus. Miller is certainly not the flashiest of UFC fighters but he has simply mowed down everyone the UFC has put in front of him with the exception of Gray Maynard en route to an 8-1 record inside the Octagon. Shalorus is unbeaten but was the beneficiary of a gift draw in his bout with Jamie Varner. Shalorus bounced back with a razor thin split decision win over Bart Palaszewski and looks to impress in his UFC debut.
Shalorus has the wrestling chops to give Miller problems but has fallen in love with the stand-up game and seems to have abandoned his wrestling roots. Miller will press forward with his underrated stand-up and eventually wear down Shalorus and get him to the mat where his top control game is smothering. It won’t be the prettiest of bouts but it will be close and competitive with Miller earning his ninth UFC giving the Miller brothers a split for the evening.
Jim Miller over Shalorus by unanimous decision.
•Nate “The Great” Marquardt (30-10-2) vs. Dan Miller (13-4): Yoshihiro Akiyama was supposed to the opponent for Marquardt but the devastation in Japan forced Akiyama to withdraw. Waiting in the wings was New Jersey native Dan Miller to step up the main card and face Marquardt. Nate the Great is coming off a disappointing decision loss to Yushin Okami in a number one contender bout. Miller snapped a three fight losing streak with recent victories over John Salter and Joe Doerksen.
Miller is a tough customer with excellent ground skills and an adequate stand-up game but in Marquardt he faces a well-rounded fighter who is likely just a little bit better in all aspects of the game. The home crowd will energize Miller early but Marquardt will take control on grind out a tough but unanimous decision win.
Marquardt over Dan Miller by unanimous decision.
•Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (27-8-2) vs. Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (7-1): CroCop enters this bout in need of a win to keep his career on the upswing after a disappointing TKO loss to Frank Mir in September. After being one of the most feared heavyweights on the planet, CroCop has looked very ordinary during his time in the UFC. Schaub is a young athletic heavyweight riding a three fight win streak and seems to be improving with each successive outing.
This is truly a crossroads fight for both men but for different reasons. For CroCop it is a chance to prove he is still relevant in the heavyweight division and for Schaub it is a chance to gain a victory over a legend and catapult himself into the title picture. It’s a tough fight to call, but if Schaub can come in and not be in awe of CroCop the way Pat Barry was he has the tools to defeat the Croatian slugger. The thought here is that there will be a changing of the guard as Schaub is able to avoid the lethal kicks from CroCop and land enough shots of his own to take a unanimous decision victory and the next step up the UFC heavyweight ladder.
Schaub over Filipovic by unanimous decision.
PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)
•Luiz “Banha” Cane (10-3) vs. Eliot “The Fire” Marshall (10-2): Marshall steps in on short notice for the injured Karlos Vemola to take on dangerous striker Luiz Cane. Since his UFC release last March, Marshall has put together a three fight win streak to earn another crack at the big show. Cane comes into this fight in desperate need of a win after suffering consecutive first round knockout defeats.
Marshall usually relies on a strategic cautious approach in his fights while Cane normally comes forward at all times so something has to give in this one. Look for Cane’s style to prevail in this one as even if the fight does go the distance the judges should favor the forward style of Cane but the thought here is that Cane gets back on the winning track with a knockout of Marshall in the middle frame.
Cane over Marshall by TKO in round two.
•Edson Barboza (7-0) vs. Anthony Njokuani (13-4): Barbosa comes in riding the hype train and is undefeated in seven pro fights with all ending before the final bell. Barboza has finished his last two opponents with his devastating leg kicks including a third round stoppage of Mike Lullo in his Octagon debut. Njokuani makes the leap over to the UFC after seven appearances in the WEC. Njokuani has picked up eight of his 13 wins by TKO in his pro MMA career.
Njokuani will hold the height and reach advantage but Barboza will likely be able to use his own striking and fearsome kicks to close the distance on his taller opponent. Njokuani has shown a bit of a suspect chin which Barboza will be glad to exploit midway through the second round and earn his second consecutive TKO win inside the Octagon.
Barboza over Njokuani by TKO in round two.

Mixed martial arts fans and sports bettors alike will witness a rare event at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia Saturday night.
B.J. Penn will enter the octagon as an underdog for the first time in two years and only the second time since 2006. Penn is listed as high as +180 in his bout against perennial welterweight contender Jon Fitch.
“Fitch is the bigger guy,” said Rob Akers, assistant sportsbook director and head MMA oddsmaker for The Venetian and Lagasse’s Stadium in Las Vegas. “He has a wrestling background and good cardio, which are usually areas Penn struggles with. Those are the three points that influenced this line.”
Akers actually opened the MMA odds with Fitch as a -160 favorite, which was significantly lower than most offshore books that currently list -200 as the going rate, and saw a steady flood of money come in on him.
He’s since adjusted the number to -190 for Fitch and isn’t worried at all about attracting Penn bettors. They’ll arrive steadily in the hours before the fight.
“Of course, you’re going to see the early action is coming in from the sharp guys,” Akers said. “Especially after his last win against Matt Hughes coming in 21 seconds and Hughes being a wrestler too, we’ll get a lot of public Penn money in the next few days leading up to the fight.”
Contrary to popular belief, the public isn’t always wrong. In the case of UFC 127, they’re on the side with the most value.
Consider that the last time Penn was an underdog came at UFC 94 when he was +130 against Georges St-Pierre, a fight he ultimately lost via TKO in the second round. The only time Penn was a bigger underdog in the UFC than he is this weekend came in 2006. Penn took a welterweight title fight on late notice as a replacement against Matt Hughes and was a +190 underdog.
The argument for Fitch revolves mostly around his size advantage in the 170-pound division. Penn has spent the majority of his career and found the most success in the 155-pound class.
The weight, however, didn’t seem to play a factor in Penn’s return to welterweight at UFC 123 last Novemember when he knocked out Hughes. He then recruited Hughes to train with him in preparation for the bout against Fitch.
“I think it’s B.J.’s fight to lose,” Akers said. “He’s done the right thing as far as training. He’s trained with Matt Hughes, who at this point is a poor man’s version of Jon Fitch.”
To use his size effectively and get the fight where he wants it to be, Fitch will have to get Penn down to the ground. Penn has always been known for excellent takedown defense.
As impressive as Fitch’s 13-1 mark in the UFC is, a glance at his record reveals he has never beaten someone of Penn’s caliber. No, Mike Pierce and Ben Saunders, two of Fitch’s last three victims, don’t count.
Look for Penn by TKO.
“Fitch will win if it goes to decision,” Akers said. “That’s the thing with this fight, I think we should be able to get a good feel on how it’s going to go in the first 2:30. If Fitch takes him down early, it’s going to be a long night for Penn.”
UFC 127 picks:
B.J. Penn (+180) vs. Jon Fitch (-200)
Pick: Penn +180
Michael Bisping (-320) vs. Jorge Rivera (+240)
Pick: Bisping -320

UFC President Dana White: Fedor Emelianenko Shocking Comments
By Sean Farrell
With the MMA world abuzz about mixed martial arts legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko tasting legitimate defeat for the second straight time in his career, UFC President Dana White did not hold back when it came to the beloved Russian after being defeated by Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the opening round of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix heavyweight tournament. The loss was Fedor’s second in a row after being submitted by Fabricio Werdum last summer.
UFC President Dana White made the exact same response when Fedor was upset by Werdum. White took to his Twitter account yet again and blasted Fedor as he wrote “:)” after Fedor lost his bout.
When White was asked by a fan to show Emelianenko some respect after all he’s done for the sport of MMA, White went on to Tweet,”wtf has he done for the sport!? Ur f–kin nuts” After that tweet another fan Tweeted that White get “tweet bombed” for his rude and unnecessary response, which lead to White tweeting, “Quit ur cryin b–ch. You don’t have to live the lie anymore. Get his nuts out of ur mouth now.”
It’s always been obvious to the public that White’s problems with Emelianenko and his M-1 Global management who represent him are well known as White has been trying to sign the Russian heavyweight for years now. Stories of Fedor signing with the UFC have swamped the MMA world for years and many times Dana White was very confident in signing the legend, only to have negotiations fall apart due to M-1 Global only wanting to co-promote with the organization.
White also noted on his Twitter his feeling on M-1 Global promoting and representing Fedor by Tweeting “he was INCREDIBLY mismanaged!!, Worst management in fight history”.
With White taking his time to go on blasting Fedor on Twitter, you have to wonder if there is something bothering the UFC President. It seems White couldn’t make as large a profit if the UFC ever did pick up Fedor given his recent losses. That fact now seems to be eating at the UFC President although he will never show or say it, he wants Fedor or at least he wanted Fedor to help fatten those UFC profits and reach a more global market.

Another Pro Ball Player Using MMA to Keep in Shape!
Jarrod Saltalamacchia taps the yips away. Big deal: Russell Martin will make you tap out, brother! (er, sorry. I have no idea what I’m talking about):
It wasn’t as if Russell Martin was preparing to grapple with Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell or his favorite Mixed Martial Arts star, fellow Montreal native Georges St. Pierre. Martin just wanted to train like them. And of course he’s in better shape. He’s apparently lost 15 pounds, which is what all the cool kids except Joba Chamberlain are doing these days. Probably needs to do everything he can, actually, because Jesus Montero is not content to start the season in Scranton.
So the new Yankee catcher spent part of the offseason doing MMA-style workouts.
“I wasn’t getting in the ring and fighting guys,” Martin said, smiling. “It was how they condition, how they prepare. Just a lot of power endurance stuff, high-intensity work with short recovery times. It builds your cardio and you get in better shape.”

More Pro Athletes Turning to Mixed Martial Arts Workout in Off Season!
Yankees' Russell Martin credits Mixed Martial Arts-style workouts with helping him shed pounds

Yanks catcher Russell Martin, who plays for the Dodgers last season, isn't getting into a cage match anytime soon, but he does recommend MMA workouts with helping him stay fit. So the new Yankee catcher spent part of the offseason doing MMA-style workouts.
"I wasn't getting in the ring and fighting guys," Martin said, smiling. "It was how they condition, how they prepare. Just a lot of power endurance stuff, high-intensity work with short recovery times. It builds your cardio and you get in better shape."
Martin credits the training with helping to shave 15 pounds off his 5-10 frame, bringing him down to 215. After hip problems last year and offseason knee surgery, he knows he will have to prove his health.
Martin went to see St. Pierre, known as "GSP," to fight and spar in Montreal. "I'm a big fan of his," Martin said. "My trainer that I trained with this offseason, he's trained GSP, so he knows what he's talking about."

West Virgina Mixed Martial Bill Clears House!
The West Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill Friday legalizing mixed-martial arts in the state amid objections from lawmakers who believe the sport is too violent.
By Walt Williams
CHARLESTON -- Legislation legalizing mixed-martial arts cleared a major hurdle Friday when the West Virginia House of Delegates voted 55-37 to pass it and send it to the Senate. MMA currently is prohibited in West Virginia despite being legal in a majority of states. Critics say it is unsporting and too violent, sometimes comparing it to the gladiatorial combat of ancient Rome.
Several lawmakers also are upset the provision legalizing MMA was amended into a separate bill in committee rather than being brought forward in its own legislation.
Lawmakers held a lengthy debate Thursday about the bill, so Friday's discussion was much shorter. Only Delegate Danny Wells, D-Kanawha, spoke out against it, saying that West Virginians had a peaceful nature that resulted in three things: a low crime rate, no capital punishment and a ban on MMA.
"When you vote think of the blood that will flow when this bill passes," he said. "Think of the color red, the color of blood, and vote no."
Wells' appeal wasn't enough to sway a majority of lawmakers, who voted in favor of the bill's passage. It now heads to the Senate.
The bill is is House Bill 2562.

Herschel Walker WINS by TKO, Gains RESPECT!
Herschel Walker wins first-round TKO in Strikeforce bout
By Alex Pavlovic
Posted: 01/29/2011 10:25:42 PM PST
Updated: 01/30/2011 03:28:20 PM PST
Even at 48, Herschel Walker is still a rookie when it comes to mixed martial arts.
You wouldn't know it by watching Walker's impressive performance Saturday night at HP Pavilion. For that matter, you wouldn't be able to tell that he's 48, either.Wearing a backward cap and a tight No. 34 shirt, Walker looked the part of a 20-something up-and-comer as he strutted into the Strikeforce cage. Minutes later, the former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL star walked out with an eye-opening victory, his second technical knockout in two career fights.
Walker barely broke a sweat, getting the TKO 3:13 into the first round of his bout with Scott Carson. Afterward, he said he hopes the win "puts the talk about age to rest."
"If you have a 20-year-old that wants to run me in the (40-yard dash), I'll run it,— Walker said. "If you have a 20-year-old that wants to face me in basketball, I'll take him. I prove age doesn't matter."
Walker drew some of the loudest cheers from a sellout crowd of more than 9,000 that later watched Nick Diaz and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza successfully defend their Strikeforce world championships. In the night's final fight, Diaz submitted Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos in the second round to win his ninth straight fight and retain his welterweight championship.
Walker, who made his MMA debut last January, probably will never even get to nine career fights or get a shot at a championship. But he's taking advantage of the time he has left in the cage.
Walker was the aggressor from the moment he and Carson touched gloves. Seconds into the fight, Walker blocked a punch and landed a huge left, sending Carson (4-2) to the canvas. Walker threw body blows for the next two minutes, one of which sent Carson's mouthpiece flying.
Walker let Carson up and quickly pounced again with another flurry of punches before the fight was stopped. Walker landed 40 of 58 strikes thrown; Carson threw just six strikes.
"I don't know what I did to be honest with you," Walker joked. "Scott kicked me twice and I said, 'Guy, if you want to go, we'll go.' I'm not here to entertain people, I'm here to fight."
Walker downplayed any talk of getting a future title shot, saying the only belt he could wear was one he bought.
Diaz (24-7) and Santos (18-14) exchanged blows for nearly two full rounds of an exciting fight before Santos took the action to the ground. Diaz locked in an armbar, submitting Santos with seconds left in the round.
"I think I put on a decent performance," Diaz said. "(Santos) is probably the biggest guy I've ever fought, and he kicks harder than anyone else I've fought. I expected what I got, and I'm happy with surviving that fight."
Diaz declined to say which fighter he wants to face next, but he took shots at several potential opponents who haven't impressed him.
"Anybody who makes it into Strikeforce obviously has a lot of potential, but that's the best thing I can say about anybody they have to fight me," Diaz added.
One guy Diaz said he respects is Robbie Lawler, who gave Souza (14-2) problems early in their middleweight championship fight, but Lawler's fitness failed him as the fight wore on. Souza came out strong in the third round, taking down Lawler (18-7) and getting a submission two minutes into the round.
In the first fight of the televised card, Roger Gracie and Trevor Prangley got off to a slow start and drew jeers from the crowd after circling each other for much of the first round. Gracie (4-0) won by submission with 41 seconds left in the round.
